Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base Review Part 1

January 30th, 2010

Thanks to Chubbybots’s post, at last I got my Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Bases! I have been searching for them since the previous outing. I always wanted to build a mechanical base as my mecha’s photo shoot background.

I actually bought 5 of the Mechanical Chain Bases (004, 005, 006 x 2 and 009) to create a huge base . But later I discovered 009’s wall unit cannot join together the same way as the rest. Orz… Oh ya, since Chubbbots already did a detailed review on 005, please refer to his post for more in-depth explanation.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 004, 005, 006 x 2 and 009

The 009’s wall is meant to fit into left side of 004/005/006’s floor, rather than the same slot as the 004/005/006 wall unit. So far I assume 001-003 and 007-010 wall unit using the same mechanism, while 004 – 006 share another type. I’ll do a detail review to cover this mechanism thing in part 2. If you worry about the mechanism, I suggest you read my review part 2 before buying them.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 004 Review

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 004
The packaging and the completed Mechanical Chain Base 004. I agree with Chubb, the material is pretty solid and the parts can easily join/remove.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 004
The front view. There are a lot of details everywhere.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 004
004 specialty 1: The small size foot rest (Catapult). Note that only this small version able to fit right in front of the wall.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 004
004 specialty 2: The mini truck, weapon carrier, container carrier and 3 medium size containers.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 006 Review

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 006
The packaging and the completed Mechanical Chain Base 006.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 006
The front view. The wall and floor are exactly the same as 004.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 006
006 specialty 1: The large size foot rest (Catapult). Note that this is the nearest I can get to the wall with the 2 big foot rest.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 006
006 specialty 2: The 3 small containers. The 3rd one I put it next to the wall.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 006
006 specialty 3: The signal lights. There are 3 parts for this, the upper 2 lights, lower 2 lights and the pole. This thingy is the reason why I bought 2 unit of 006 instead of 004 and 005.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 004 + 006

Now the fun part begins. Join both of Mechanical Chain Base together and you will get something much better out of it. This version uses 004 + 006.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base Combination
After seeing so many photos, how big is the base and how it look like when I put my mecha there? Let me use the Revoltech EVA-01 as benchmark since it is around the size of a 1/144 Gundam.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base Combination
The base is just tall enough for 1/144 gundam or Revoltech Figures. But this won’t look good for my photo shoot =\

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base Combination
EVA-01’s feet on 004’s small catapult. I think the size just nice. The gap between them is adjustable, it allow us to make it slightly wider or narrower.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base Combination
EVA-01’s feet on 006’s large catapult. A bit too big for EVA…

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base 004 + 005 + 006 x 2

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base Combination
Gattai! 4X Mechanical Base! Muahahahahaha! Now we have more space to play around. This is needed if you want to put Soul of Chogokin or 1/100 Master Grade Gunpla. Noted that I did not include 009 here, in the photo only has 004, 005, 006 and 006. Time is limited so I didn’t include the detail parts of 005 and the other 006.

Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base Combination
A test shot uses Revoltech EVA-01 with the base as background. It looks great!

To be honest, I would need another 1 unit so I can extend the base width, else it is pretty restricted if I have more than 1 figure to be on the base. I’ll write a part 2 for this Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base, introduce 009 and how it work compare to the rest.

Talk about Kotobukiya Mechanical Chain Base Review Part 1

  1. rockleelotus says:

all your base are belong to us!!

lol very cool. works really well as a background and i see what you mean about needing to extend the length, more gattai! XD

  2. B-Mecha says:

    @rockleelotus:
6X Gattai! I don’t want to waste the 009… most likely just to put them together without “joining” properly. They cost me quite some cash =__=

  3. AstrayP03 says:

so the catapult for 006 can support MG?
Cool! but I would rather have the ncontainers than the lights :P

can’t seem to find it anywhere tho…

  4. B-Mecha says:

    @AstrayP03:
The catapult is ok, but the wall’s is not tall enough.

004 005 006 each of them include 3 containers of different sizes. for MG maybe you need bigger container to match the scale.

  5. Marzz says:

Wow! You bought so many bases??

  6. Jacques says:

Wow, these mechanical bases looks really impressive when put together straight out of box. I really like the last photo turned out.

I was looking for them in Singapore previously but after realizing the price for them, I stopped. Turns out each were selling for 15-20 dollars. And 4 would totaled to 60-80. So I’m temporarily put them on hold till I really had surplus cash to spare

  7. chubbybots says:

Lol thats fast man!! Nice review and with Eva!! I can almost feel him being catapulted to fight the angels ^^ It is very useful for telling ppl about the different bases and what can and cannot me connected.

Thanks for the link :D Plus we have another 2 loots that await a little review hehe!!

  8. Gunstray says:

Too bad this arent sold locally in my area, but does any of the base comes with an arm crane, I like those things in a hanger?

  9. divinelight says:

Looks good, I really need a set of them to make a great backdrops I guess.
Ow man, I need to pay more expense again LOL >_<

  10. B-Mecha says:

@Marzz: Yea, cos I need them for photo shoot and I have to make sure it is big enough.

@Jacques: There should be quite sufficient stock to last for a while. 007-010 are pretty new in the market.

@chubb: Not that fast, lol. But somehow managed to post it before my training camp. I just came back.. dead tired. Later need to do review for 009 too xD.

@Gunstray: Yup, It is either 007, 008 or 010. There are 2 versions, one with the shouldering arm and the other one is mechanical hand (like those UFO doll catcher in arcade center).

@divinelight: yea XD. With the same price I can get another 2-3 figures

  11. bluedrakon says:

That is so cool. You can really get into some great detail on these. Are you planning on doing some painting to them as well?

  12. moemoekyun says:

    I thought you don’t like evangelion ^^
wow you bought a lot chain base can you show US how many mecha collection do you have ?? I think you should have around 30-40 revoltech

  13. B-Mecha says:

@bluedrakon: I will try to do the panel line and some minor painting (like black and silver). I find it a bit too plastic for now :D

@moemoekyun: LOL That’s the biggest misunderstanding ever. I rewatched EVA series 7 times and I do have Revoltech EVAs, but only the 2.0 version. I even did a movie review for the awesome EVA 2.0.

Errr… I din count them… Revoltech alone can be 90+… SD Gundam around 15… Let them rest in peace for now… I don’t feel like messing with them before chinese new year XD

  14. eru says:

oooh~ chain bases! i’ve been wanting to buy them but im still learning about it. thanks for the review!

one question though, do chain bases have size variations? because i plan on using them on my yamato 1/48 valk (which is a lot bigger than a 1/144) ^^;; …they work on my 1/72 valk kits though (but only in fighter mode)

  15. LEon says:

After reading both you and chubbybot post, I am determine to get these pieces! Hope they still have it on sale. How much is one btw?

  16. B-Mecha says:

@eru: I’m not sure about that… but I didn’t see any other size at the moment.

@LEon: M workshop is selling 004-006 for SGD16.90 while 007-010 are SGD19.90. I’m crafting part 2 of the review, maybe you want to read it first? :D There are something to beware of.

  17. John Wong says:

Would get mine from HLJ soon… I like the Number 5… no choice for this one… must get at least 4 unit, 8 unit even better….

  18. B-Mecha says:

    @John Wong:
Wow 8 is a lot! You must be ambitious to build a really huge base.

  19. John Wong says:

Well, not that I want to build a huge base… but I need to give some to “non-Gundam” items as well… hahahaha… Macross and Revoltech might need this base as well…

  20. LEon says:

AGh! I still don’t have the time to head down to get!! thanks for the reminder.
